News Release April 2010 For Bicycling Around Minnesota (BAM)
"Discover the ethnic heritage........ including Lake Superior."
Bicycling Around Minnesota (BAM) has selected Northeastern Minnesota for its fifth annual ride. Up to 275 bicyclists will converge on Cloquet, Duluth, Two Harbors, Virginia, Eveleth and Hibbing from August 18th – 21st, 2010. Organized in 2006, the goal of BAM is to promote tourism, fitness and safe bicycling on scenic Minnesota roads. Last year there were riders representing 12 states and Canada.
Beginning and ending in Cloquet, the bike route meanders through the port city of Duluth before heading up to Two Harbors. After a restful night along Lake Superior, BAM riders will pedal away from the shoreline. Enjoying the quiet county roads, riders will spend the next two days exploring the Mesabi Iron Range and the cities of Virginia, Hibbing and Eveleth. On the fourth day the route travels in a southern direction, through small rail towns back to BAM's starting point. This ride is intended for moderate and experienced riders and will cover from 65-70 miles a day. Local residents are invited to participate.
The Convention and Visitor Bureaus, Chambers of Commerce and Cities of Cloquet, Duluth, Two Harbors, Virginia, Eveleth and Hibbing have been working with the tour directors and coordinators on camping locations, meals and other logistics for each day. Hiway Federal Credit Union and Penn Cycle are sponsors of BAM.
Helmets are required and the rules of the road do apply. BAM is committed to educate motorists and bicyclists on “Share the Road” (www.sharetheroadmn.org). “Share the Road” is a bicycle safety education program to educate adult bicyclists and motorists on how they can share the road safely to reduce crashes that result in injuries and death.
