What does tribal sovereignty mean, and why does it matter today? Join Lyz Jaakola for an engaging introduction to tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, and the roles and jurisdictions of tribal governments. Participants will gain a better understanding of how tribal, local, state, and federal governments interact and what these relationships mean today.

Lyz Jaakola is a Fond du Lac tribal member, Cloquet City Councilor, faculty and board member at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, and co owner of Miigwitches Brew Coffee. An educator and community leader, she has taught American Indian Studies throughout the region for more than two decades and helped produce the Emmy Award-winning documentary series Ojibwe Waasa Inaabidaa: We Look in All Directions. She regularly shares her knowledge of Anishinaabe culture and history through teaching and public presentations.
